John A. Perry, CFRE
President and Principal Consultant
John Perry is the founder, president and principal of Engaged Generosity, strategic consultants in philanthropy. With over 23 years’ experience in healthcare philanthropy and higher education, he has experience leading campaigns and raising principal and major gifts for academic medical centers, community health systems, cancer centers, children’s hospitals, medical schools and disease-specific organizations. Prior to his work in medical philanthropy, John worked for 16 years for small United Way agencies, leading a team raising annual gifts, running special events, writing foundation proposals and recruiting trustees. He is adept at working with organizations large and small.
Most recently, John served as Associate Vice President for Philanthropy, overseeing giving for the University of Kentucky HealthCare system and College of Medicine. He also served as Chief Philanthropy Officer for the Joslin Diabetes Center (a Harvard Medical School affiliate), Senior Associate Dean for Medical Advancement at Brown University, Director of Development at the University of Michigan Medical School, Chief Development Officer of the former Oakwood Healthcare Foundation and Senior Director of Major Gifts for the Karmanos Cancer Institute.
John has recruited, developed and led teams of high-performing gift officers and support staff, led capital campaigns and closed major and principal gifts to maximize mission impact. The strategies developed over the years have resulted in a doubling or tripling of new gifts and enhanced retention of donors to give again. This intentional strategy is based on deep engagement and focused cultivation, solicitation and stewardship practices.
John now brings this approach to client organizations. Engaged Generosity seeks to develop a donor base that is more intentional and deeply engaged with the mission of the institution. This strategic approach spans the donor cycle from identification to stewardship and engages senior leaders, mission staff and volunteers as aligned partners and allies with benefactors. This leads to deeper relationships and understanding of the impact of giving on the organization’s strategic priorities.
John holds a BA from DePauw University and an MS in Administration from Central Michigan University. He has been a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) since 2006 and has been a member of the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy, Association of Fundraising Professionals, Council for the Advancement and Support of Education and Group on Institutional Advancement for the Association of American Medical Colleges.
He and his wife Julie live in Cincinnati and are proud parents and grandparents.
